Couples Therapy By Doctoral-Level Psychologists: What To Expect At WTG

Couples therapy at Williamsburg begins with some preliminary questions to get an understanding of the relationship. We want to know you and your partner as individuals and as a couple so we can best understand what brought you to therapy and what you hope to get out of it.

Setting The Tone

We use a neutral and helpful approach to find patterns and offer strategic skills to make a partnership work better. We believe that this can be achieved by creating a safe space for both partners to be heard and respected.

This can involve asking questions about specific issues, communication, intimacy, and trust in the relationship.

Once we have established a starting point for your relationship, individual sessions will begin with each partner. During these sessions, our therapists will help you and your partner look at things from different points of view, better understand your own needs, and come up with new ways to deal with problems or disagreements as they come up.

This process can often be done in a series of couples' sessions, with one partner going first and then trading places for the next round.

Identifying Problems

Once the problem(s) have been identified, the therapist will work with you and your partner to set goals for the therapy process.

This can involve building intimacy, improving communication skills, or resolving conflicts in your relationship.

During couples or marriage counseling, you and your partner will do exercises, talk about your goals, and do other things that will help you reach those goals. These may include role-playing exercises, problem-solving activities, or personalized therapeutic interventions.

Through discussing patterns in the relationship and developing new ways to address old problems, couples can find new ways to relate to each other and move toward a hopeful future.

How We Get There

Of course, the specific process will vary depending on your needs and the type of issues you're facing in your relationship. From time to time, you may be assigned homework to aid in behavior change.

Most couples get a lot out of relationship counseling, as long as both people want to make the relationship better. No matter what comes up during couples therapy, our therapists are dedicated to helping you make your relationship healthier and stronger.
