Somatic Experiencing Practitioner

Kathy Cherry is a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner and Meditation Instructor for The Program at the Williamsburg Therapy Group. Kathy is not a psychologist, but utilizes mindfulness and body engagement to facilitate a therapeutic process. Kathy’s work pairs nicely with conjoint therapy or as a stand alone experience. A founding member of DharmaPunx NYC, Kathy has over two decades of dedicated mindfulness practice in the Insight Meditation tradition. She has taught meditation and mindfulness and offered retreats nationally and internationally since 2014.

Kathy specializes in the treatment of folks who find themselves struggling with symptoms related to trauma, PTSD or CPTSD like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, interpersonal conflict, chronic shame, self-criticism, overwhelming negative thoughts, and feeling “lost” or “stuck”.  She guides her clients in an embodied approach to becoming “unstuck” from old patterns of relating to themselves, others, and the world that often hinder connection and growth and perpetuate emotional distress.

As a SE™ practitioner, Kathy meets the client where they are, blending this modality with Mindfulness and the client's own internal wisdom, connecting the intellect, body and senses.  These shifts restore self-regulation lost to physical and emotional trauma and allows individuals to rediscover their sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness.

Developing an awareness of their internal experience and utilizing a variety of skillful tools to meet the uncomfortable aspects of that unfolding process;  builds the clients’ embodied awareness and ability to meet, manage, hold and metabolize their felt experiences- regardless of whether the experience is recent or happened decades ago.  The process is gentle and gradual, working with the client’s resilience and capacity for regulation.

Somatic Experiencing® is a 3 year Certificate training in a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application. The SE™ approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. SE™ offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states.  (via traumahealing.org)
