Dr. Sharon Asher (she/her) is a licensed psychologist who provides psychotherapy to individuals and couples. She specializes in helping people with addiction, anxiety, anger, depression, relationships, trauma, changing mental and behavioral habits, identity exploration (e.g., culture, career), life transitions, and social justice.
Dr. Asher strives to create an active, collaborative, and respectful space where each person’s perspective can be heard and practical, realistic, and immediate changes can be made. She tailors Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness to each person’s personality, strengths, and specific struggles. Through careful understanding and discussing practical opportunities for growth and change, Dr. Asher believes that optimism, new directions, hope, and personal growth can be cultivated in any situation.
Prior to the Williamsburg Therapy Group, Dr. Asher has worked in community mental health, outpatient private practice, research teams, acute psychiatric care, and medical settings. She has worked with a wide variety of struggles, including intense emotions and behaviors, relationship struggles, trauma, cultural and identity issues, substance use, and end of life issues. Her research has included the interplay of anger, anxiety, and depression, as well as empowering communities by providing useful skills, including mindfulness and communication strategies in families with substance use.
