Anxiety can keep you from living a fulfilling life.

While it is common to feel anxious at times, anxiety can make everyday experiences feel overwhelming and unmanageable. In these circumstances, working with a clinical psychologist can help you better understand these feelings and develop coping skills to overcome anxiety.

What is Anxiety?

While anxiety is a typical human reaction to stressful situations, in certain individuals, it can become a debilitating force that attaches an excessive and persistent level of worry to everyday situations. Some of the symptoms of anxiety that benefit from therapy and/or medical help include:

  • Excessive Worrying

  • Problems Concentrating

  • Excessive Irritability

  • Muscle Tension

  • Fatigue

  • Trouble Sleeping

  • Panic Attacks

  • Social Avoidance

  • Irrational Fear

Some people experience these feelings daily or almost every day, sometimes for no apparent reason, making it difficult to function. When these feelings occur frequently enough that they interfere with a person’s day-to-day life, they may be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

A variety of different mental health disorders fall under the umbrella of Anxiety Disorders. For example, both Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Phobias have both been categorized as Anxiety Disorders. The commonality between these two seemingly disparate disorders is an atypical response to stress that causes a person to become overwhelmed.

Anxiety Disorders include:

  • Panic Disorder: People with Panic Disorder often experience panic attacks. These attacks can involve feelings of impending doom, shortness of breath, chest pain, or heart palpitations. A person with panic disorder may live in fear of the next panic attack, causing them to limit their amount of social interactions.

  • Phobias:Phobias are characterized by excessive fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. Some common Phobias include arachnophobia, a fear of spiders, and claustrophobia, a fear of confined spaces or crowds. Phobias may provoke panic attacks in certain people.

  • Social Anxiety Disorder:Social Anxiety Disorder is the extreme fear of being judged by others in social situations. It can lead a person to avoid social situations due to self-consciousness or fear of embarrassment.

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD):OCD is characterized by recurring irrational thoughts (obsessions) that lead you to perform specific, repeated behaviors (compulsions). Common obsessive thoughts could include a preoccupation with germs or symmetry. Corresponding compulsion could include repeated washing of the hands or ordering or arranging objects.

  • Separation Anxiety: Separation anxiety is the fear of being away from home or loved ones. Separation anxiety disorder can cause sudden feelings of intense anxiety, fear, or terror when related to a parent, child, or loved one. This can include a fear of a person’s parent being killed or their child being kidnapped.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): People with PTSD often experience intense thoughts and feelings related to a past traumatic experience. They may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares or feel sadness, fear, or anger when reminded of the initial trauma.
